South Africa — Africa mourned Ghana's World Cup loss on Saturday, as socialite Paris Hilton's marijuana arrest gave a celebrity drama show twist to the quarter-finals.Miss Pari Hilton's court drama competed for press attention after Ghana's Black Stars ended Africa's World Cup dreams by crashing out in a penalty shoot-out with Uruguay.
The American party girl meanwhile was arrested for alleged possession of marijuana at a World Cup match Friday in Port Elizabeth but a judge tossed out the charges against her after her friend, former Playboy Playmate Jennifer Rovero, pleaded guilty.
The pair were arrested at the Brazil-Netherlands quarter-final in Port Elizabeth, after police smelt marijuana. Police approached when a joint was thrown to the ground and the women apparently were ushered inside by bodyguards.
"Police seized the evidence and approached the women inside the stadium. The women were taken into custody after a bodyguard handed a second cannabis cigarette over to the police," said police spokeswoman Sally De Beer.
"Charges were withdrawn against Miss Paris Hilton as her co-accused acknowledged being in possession of the cannabis and pleaded guilty."
Her arrest knocked Ghana off the front page of Afrikaans daily Die Burger and fuelled media reports other Saturday newspapers. In a Twitter post, she played down the incident and said she still loved South Africa.
"Hey guys, there's a lot of crazy rumors going around. Just want you all to know the truth. Everything is completely fine," she said.
"I was not charged or arrested, cause I didn't do anything. I was assisting the police with the investigation and answering their questions.
"Everyone was super nice and friendly to me. I love South Africa! Such an amazing place, especially during The World Cup! Hope that clears everything up. Love you guys, thanks for your concern. Xoxo P."
But De Beer said the heiress had been arrested and charged.
"She was arrested and then the charges were formally withdrawn in court," she said.
"Maybe what's she's trying to say is that she was cooperative, which apparently she was, very sweet and co-operative."
Hilton, with her blonde hair in two ponytails and appearing relaxed, replied "Thank you, your honour," when the charges were dropped and left the court, after the three-minute hearing shortly after midnight on Saturday.
The state dropped charges against her after 31-year-old Rovero admitted guilt and was ordered to either spend 30 days in jail or pay a 1,000 rand (128 dollar, 100 euro) fine. She paid the fine.
A darling of the tabloids, Hilton, the great-granddaughter of the Hilton hotel chain's founder, shot to fame in 2003 when her boyfriend leaked a video of their sexual escapades on the Internet.
Hilton's court drama came as Africa bemoaned Ghana's World Cup exit which ended in a dramatic shoot-out after a penalty by striker Asamoah Gyan hit the bar in the dying minutes of extra time.
The Cape Town-based Weekend Argus headline said "Africa was robbed" in its front page article. "That was the overwhelming feeling after Uruguay beat Ghana, Africa's last World Cup hope."
"Africa's dream shattered," bemoaned The Herald in Zimbabwe.
"It was a cruel end to the game," the newspaper said. "This was Africa's finest chance to make the last four and the Black Stars -- who fought with the right spirit for the entire match -- came close, yet ended very far from making it.
"Sadly Gyan missed and as he cried last night, Africa cried with him."

South Africa is often referred to as one of the high-risk areas in the world with a murder rate on par with that of Rio de Janeiro according to the United Nations in 2006.
With 1797 murders with a population of roughly 4,785,000 residents in Cape Town the murder ratio is around 55 murders for every 100,000 persons. These are shocking figures for sure. But you should know more about Crime in Cape Town and learn where most of the crime happens.

How safe is expat living in South Africa?

The South African crime rate sounds and is intimidating, well, but I do not want to hide the fact that if you are prepared to investigate thoroughly where to move and how to get to work safely and where to go and where not, living in the Mother City is not more dangerous for expatriates normally as living in London or New York.

I've a friend who and his entire resides in Cape Town for four years now and they have never had any trouble or worries for their personal safety, although they had some bad experiences relating to criminal activities in the business environment, like burglary and white collar crime.
However you will have to stay clear of the more dangerous areas, but also our friends in various different suburbs all over the Cape peninsula live peacefully here for years without ever haven encountered any serious violence.
Surely you have heard about the xenophobic outbreaks in South Africa, which were broadcast all over the world last year.
In this GUIDE I will give you some info on the current situation in South Africa (September 2009).
If you take some basic precautions you should not have to worry about your personal safety too much and you will feel and stay safe.

• For your safety in South Africa invest in a good security system and get connected to an Armed Response team from a security company which operates in your area. Check which company your neighbors use. The more clients a company has got in your area the better the response as they often deploy extra cars when sufficient clientele in your area.
• Use outside perimeter control beams, an electric fence or burglar bars to make sure nobody will get inside without alarming the response company.
• Never leave your valuables in sight from windows.
• Store valuables in your well-hidden safety deposit box. More valuable effects or documents you will not need everyday should be deposited at you bank safety deposit.
• Keep your house or apartment door locked at all times, whether you're in the house or not.
• If someone rings the bell, check who it is before opening the door. If you are unsure what the visitor wants and feel insecure of his/her intent, do not open the door.
• Do not have any personal identification on your key set. In case you loose your keys or they get stolen immediately get your locks changed.

Safety in Cape Town - when out and about:

• Avoid wearing expensive jewelry, cameras and other valuables.
• Do not carry large sums of money. But always keep some money with you to have some money to hand over when being mugged.
• Keep some coins in your pockets to hand out to car guards without having to open your wallet.
• At night and day, steer clear of isolated areas, building sites and isolated beaches
• Be aware that ATMs are regular targets for pick pockets or credit card thieves. Do never give any details to a stranger. Phone the emergency number shown on the ATM for clarifications with your bank.
• Avoid being near parking cash transit vans. Armed robberies and heists are a sad but almost daily occurrence in South Africa these days.

Safety tips when getting around in your car

• Plan your route in advance avoid getting too close to townships.
• Always carry a cell phone (mobile) in case of an emergency or a breakdown of your car.
• Keep the car doors locked at all times and wind the windows up when coming to a street crossing where there are street sellers or beggars.
• Lock valuable items in the boot (trunk) and never leave your handbag in sight. Even when driving, store your bag under the passenger seat out of sight. When parking somewhere, never leave anything lying around in your car. Jackets, shoes, books, CDs when visible from outside are popular targets
• Always park in well-lit areas. When parking in parking garages leave your car close to the lifts.
• Never pick up strangers. Should you get lost, do not accept help from people who want to show you the way while accompanying you in your car.
